Honey sbiten - a recipe for making a traditional Slavic drink

The article tells about how to cook an old Russian sbiten according to a modern cooking recipe. You will learn what spices you can use for this warming drink, in which there is not a drop of alcohol. Honey sbiten - a recipe for making a traditional Slavic drink

Ingredients

Water 1 liter
Honey 150 g
Sugar 150 g
Star anise 1 star
Cinnamon 1 stick
Lemon zest 20 g
Cardamom 3-5 pcs.
Ginger root 20 g

Step cooking

  1. We peel the ginger root from the peel and cut it into thin plates.
    We clean and cut thin ginger root ginger.
  2. Pour 1 liter of water into the pan, add 150 g of sugar, 150 g of honey to it and mix thoroughly.
    Pour water into the pan, add honey and sugar.
  3. Further spices: the recipe uses 1 star anise star, 1 stick of cinnamon, a small plate of lemon peel and 3-5 boxes of cardamom, but you can use others, for example, black or allspice peas, dried or fresh mint, cloves, bay leaf and even hops. Add the selected spices and the prepared ginger root to the pan, and mix everything again.
    Add all the prepared spices.
  4. We put the pan on the stove and bring the mixture to a boil. We cook for 30 minutes without a lid, after which we turn off the fire, cover the pan with a lid and hold for another half an hour so that the sbiten is well insisted.
    Bring the drink to a boil, cook for 30 minutes, and then cover it and let it brew.
  5. Serve preferably hot with a sprig of mint or a slice of lemon, but a cold drink will not lose its taste.
    As you can see, the recipe for cooking sbitn is actually simple.
Did you know? This recipe makes relatives of sbiten with another tasty and aromatic drink - mulled wine. It is done in the same way, only instead of water we use red or white wine, or dark beer ("gzhanets"). Boil wine or beer is not necessary, it is enough to heat it up to 70ºС (first bubbles) and let it brew well and soak in the taste of spices.
