What is soda ash? The sodium salt of carbonic acid, its formula (Na2CO3), sodium carbonate, linen soda are the names of the same substance. White large and small crystals are characterized by the ability to quickly absorb moisture. Therefore, storage is allowed in tightly closed containers or in dry rooms.
What is different from food
What is the difference between soda ash and baking soda? At least the fact that food can be used in cooking, but sodium carbonate - no. There are four more differences.
- Alkaline reaction. In sodium carbonate it is more powerful - ph11, in baking soda - ph8.
- View. Sodium carbonate has a different composition and a more loose structure.
- The power of exposure. A non-food compound is usually used to clean excessively soiled areas that ordinary soda cannot handle.
- Security. Although soda ash is not as dangerous as causticbut nevertheless during interaction it is necessary to observe safety measures to protect skin, nose, mouth and eyes.
Soda ash: home use with photo
Where is soda used? Using soda ash with the right approach will help to cope with the most complex procedures for cleaning. The cost of sodium carbonate is low - an average of 20 rubles per 1 kg (data for July 2017). Thanks to the affordable price tag, sodium carbonate leaves far behind the “competitors” in the household chemistry department.
Wash, bleach and care for the machine
Sodium carbonate can be used to wash laundry. Prepare homemade powder or liquid gel. Powder: it is enough to pour two teaspoons of soda and powder borax per washing cycle (you can throw 150 g of laundry soap shavings if you wish). Gel: the same ingredients must be combined with 3.5 liters of water, heated and mixed until the components are completely dissolved. It can also be used as a detergent.
- Machine washable. For heavily soiled items, add three tablespoons of white crystals to a regular laundry detergent or use homemade powder. Set the water temperature to 50-100 ° C.
- Handwash. Pour homemade powder into water heated to 40 ° C (proportions: three tablespoons per 5 l). Leave things to soak for two to four hours.
- Whitening. Composition for whitening things with soda ash: in boiling water (1.5 l), leave until dissolving a bar of laundry soap (100 g). Add as much sodium carbonate. Wait for it to cool, and add a couple drops of any of the essential oils to make things smell good. Such a composition can be used both when washing in a machine and by hands.
- Washing machine cleaning. Homemade liquid gel is not only suitable for washing. He is also able to clean the washing machine, get rid of mold and the smell of mustiness. Treat parts of the unit, not forgetting the rubber seal on the door. Turn on the idle wash at the highest temperature, before adding a glass of the remaining homemade product.
Kitchen
Before starting cleaning, it is important to know how to make a solution of soda ash. Three tablespoons is enough for a liter of boiling water. Sodium carbonate copes well even with complex contaminants. Use the six recommendations before landing in the kitchen.
- Dirty surfaces. Cleaning surfaces with soda ash will return them to their original appearance. Prepare the surface with the prepared solution: microwave, tile, coffee maker. Withdraw tea or coffee stains on dishes. After surface treatment, rinse them with a clean cloth and wipe thoroughly until dry.
- Oven and gas stove. To make a home cleaning product, mix three tablespoons of sodium carbonate with a spoon of silicate glue (you can buy it in liquid chemistry departments of household chemicals, but do not confuse it with ordinary PVA glue). Add washing powder (0.5 tablespoon) and water (250 ml). Smear the resulting product on surfaces and grids. When the dirt becomes softer, remove it with a wet sponge. If the fat and soot are old, then the procedure is worth repeating. A homemade product is suitable for repeated use, but before storage, tightly close the lid of the container. For the next use, mix the mixture and add water if necessary.
- Sink. In the same way, you can achieve the purity of the sink, faucet and its elements.
- Dishes. Can I wash dishes with soda ash? With a reasonable approach, it will not bring harm. Prepare the solution in the manner described above, treat the mixture with dirty areas and grease on plates and glasses. Do not forget to rinse everything with clean water.
- Pans and other cooking utensils. Soda successfully fights carbon deposits, yellow spots, scale and multilayer fat. Take a large metal basin or pan. Fold pans, spoons, forks, cookers and other appliances into a container. Pour so much water that it covers the entire surface of the dishes. Put on fire. Pour soda ash (one pack) and silicate glue (two to three bottles). If desired, you can add shavings of laundry soap obtained from one bar. Wait for boiling. After leaving the kitchen utensils to acidify. 20 minutes are enough for light pollution, up to three hours for stable pollution. Then remove all items and rinse.
- Drain pipes. Linen soda will help to cope with blockage. Pour half a pack of salt and the same amount of sodium carbonate into the problematic drain. Fill the thermonuclear mixture with boiled water only. After a short period of time, the water will leave.
Plumbing
Linen soda is also able to perfectly clean the surfaces of bathtubs, a toilet bowl and other plumbing, which requires not only cleanliness, but also disinfection, from dirt, rust, grease and yellowness. Plumbing faience will shine if you use one of three processing methods.
- With laundry soap. Take the shavings of laundry soap and linen soda in equal amounts, add water until gruel. To add a pleasant smell, add a couple drops of essential oil. Wet the plumbing, apply the solution and leave it for about an hour. Then rinse the mixture with a sponge and rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water.
- With vinegar. Treat the bath with white vinegar or a solution obtained from citric acid (one or two teaspoons of powder per liter of water). Sprinkle the surface with linen soda. Leave the mixture for ten minutes (if heavily soiled, it can take longer). Then wipe with a sponge or brush. Rinse with water at the end.
- With baking soda. Mix two tablespoons of baking soda and soda ash. Add water to the mixture until a porridge-like consistency is obtained. Rub the earthenware surfaces. Wait 15 minutes. Mix a quarter cup of bleach and vinegar, apply the solution on top and wait another 30 minutes. Wipe everything with a sponge and rinse with clean water.
Cleaning
Linen soda will help facilitate cleaning. She can clean many surfaces: floors, carpets, rugs, furniture. But do not handle sodium or carbon dioxide on wooden or painted floors, lacquered parquet floors, fiberglass tiles and laminates. The next four steps will make the house much cleaner.
- Mopping. In one five-liter bucket of water, add three tablespoons of sodium carbonate. Wash the floors with this mixture and then go with clean water.
- Remove odor from the tray. The "aroma" of the toilet of pets will not cause discomfort if under the grate in the tray with a thin layer spray the bottom with carbon dioxide.
- Removing smell from the palace. If the baby "did his job" on the carpet, sprinkle that stain with soda ash and leave for half an hour. Remove the powder with a sponge.
- Salvation of a damp carpet. Even if the product is damp, you can make it smell fresh. Sprinkle it with alkali and forget for a day. Then sweep off the powder or vacuum.
Removing old paint
It is not recommended to use sodium carbonate to clean only painted surfaces, but it will help to get rid of dried traces of enamel easily. Wear a respirator, goggles and gloves. Follow the instructions in five steps.
- Dissolve 1 kg of soda in 5 l of water.
- Put the solution on fire and heat to 60 ° C. Take a container of such a size that the liquid in it occupies a third of the area, since during heating the solution will foam and try to "run away".
- Mix a pack of slaked lime with water until a creamy consistency is formed and gradually add to the heated mixture.
- Brush the product on the paint. When it starts to bubble, put a putty knife in.
- Rinse off any remaining product with water or solvent.
7 ways for gardeners
Sodium carbonate will help to get a good harvest of fruits and berries, to destroy various pests. Below are seven ways to use soda ash in your garden.
- Harmful insects. In a bucket of water, dissolve 40 g of soap bar and five to six teaspoons of sodium carbonate. Processing the bushes with the product will save from insects. Spraying once a week will relieve powdery mildew. The procedure should not be carried out during rains and intense heat. As a preventative measure, one treatment in spring and summer is enough.
- Gray rot. Strawberries will be saved if treated with a solution prepared from a bucket of water and one tablespoon of sodium carbonate. Use should be every 15 days.
- Leaf beetle. Dissolve a tablespoon of sodium carbonate and a special green soap for plants (half a glass) in 10 l of water. Spray the plantations once every seven days until all pests disappear.
- Caterpillars on the grape. During the ripening of the clusters, it is necessary to treat them with a mixture obtained from a bucket of water and 75 g of sodium carbonate powder. Bathing will make the berries more sweet.
- Rejuvenation of roses. In a five-liter bucket of water, dissolve one tablespoon of sodium carbonate and the same amount of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts), 0.5 tablespoons of ammonia (do not add it for young plants). Treat the bushes with the composition and repeat the procedure after ten days.
- Weeds. Prepare the solution by mixing soda with water (two to four tablespoons of powder per liter of liquid). In the heat, pour harmful plants with the mixture. The product is safe and less toxic, unlike in-store preparations containing “chemistry”.
- Determination of soil acidity. Alkali in contact with acidic medium will hiss.
Where not to use
There are materials that are strictly contraindicated in contact with soda ash. For example, paint after such processing may come off. Also, do not wash alkaline stretch ceilings. Four more surfaces that do not “love” linen soda.
- Delicate materials. Sodium carbonate is harmful to silk, wool, leather, impregnated fabrics, membrane surfaces, dermatin and suede.
- Aluminum, cast iron and plastic. Aluminum and cast iron have already been mentioned above. Also do not use a general cleaning product for the refrigerator. Due to strong alkali, plastic may deteriorate.
- Wood, varnish. Sodium carbonate is harmful to the surfaces of wooden and lacquered furniture: polishing may suffer.
- Fiberglass. Brick and tiles made from fiberglass also do not like soda ash.
Precautionary measures
Soda ash is far from being as safe as baking soda. Therefore, always work with gloves on, and after each procedure, do not forget to rinse thoroughly with water. Also observe the following three rules.
- Further from the products. Do not store linen soda with food, and keep it away from children and four-legged pets.
- Eyes and skin. If alkali splashes into the eye or gets on your skin, flush these areas with plenty of clean water.
- Use a respirator. Too much sodium carbonate can cause respiratory irritation. If there is no protective mask, do all the manipulations with outstretched hand.
Now you know what soda ash is for. However, the scope of its application is very wide and is not limited to everyday life. Its properties are used in animal husbandry and industrial production. Judging by the reviews, washed with sodium carbonate bathrobes and overalls look like new.
Reviews: "Wonder soda even cleans robes"
This is a unique assistant in the household. I met her when the kitchen drained, I had to call locksmiths, clean. So they said something - that you (we, homeowners)) will buy all sorts of tyreths, etc., and then they freeze in pipes and this only exacerbates the situation. Buy ordinary soda ash and pour it into the pipes in order to clean it. And the dishes how much she helped she wash !! I advise everyone.

I want to share my experience. I have a husband and father-in-law crane operators. So you know the washing is enough, especially after repair work. Washed these things cheap “Myth” or “Biolan” poorly washed. They advised to add soda ash to the powder, fuel oil things were washed off the first time. It did not even require additional rinsing. Pluses on the face are the cleanliness and softness of "fuel oil overalls." Mena enjoyed getting to know the “miracle soda”!
A familiar master in the repair of washing machines suggested how to deal with scale. Prevention and control of scale in washing machines of all types:Once every 2-3 months, we pour 10-12 bags of edible citric acid (5 g) into an empty drum, turn on the machine to the maximum mode (I turn on cotton 90 degrees). (2 years I pour citric acid directly into the drum).
No kalgon is needed. Our house has medium hardness water. I think if still hard water, then protection for the machine is needed.Marishka, http://stranamasterov.ru/node/757296
By the way, soda spoils the skin of the hands, it is still advisable to wear gloves. I worked as a nanny in children. garden and to remove fat, we added soda to the dishwashing bath, so my hands then dried, and my hands scratched and cracked ..
